The personality model of the TA

The psychological school of Transactional Analysis (TA), as introduced by Eric Berne ("Games People Play"), offers an easy to realize model for understanding (most of) the human psyche. Die psychologische Richtung der Transaktionsanalyse (TA), eingeführt durch Eric Berne ("Spiele der Erwachsenen"), bietet ein leicht zu verstehendes Modell, um die menschliche Psyche (zum größten Teil) zu begreifen.
According to the TA, every human personality is composed of three different psychological sub-systems, or sub-personalities: the "adult self", the "child self" and the "parent self". Nach der TA besteht jede menschliche Persönlichkeit aus drei unterschiedlichen psychologischen Teilsystemen, oder Sub-Persönlichkeiten: dem "Erwachsenen-Ich", dem "Kindheits-Ich" und dem "Eltern-Ich".
The scientific name for the "adult self" - symbol is the A - as used by Eric Berne is "neopsychic ego-state". I prefer to use the term "rational psyche", as it is characterized by rational and logic thought, responsible acting, mental agility and the ability to find new solutions to problems. Der wissenschaftliche Name für das "Erwachsenen-Ich" - Symbol ist das A - wie von Eric Berne verwendet lautet "neopsychische Funktion". Ich bevorzuge den Ausdruck "Rationalpsyche", denn charakteristisch sind rationales und logisches Denken, verantwortungsbewußtes Handeln, geistige Wachheit und die Fähigkeit, neue Lösungen für Probleme zu finden.
The "child self" has the symbol C, its scientific name is "archaeopsychic ego-state". I call it the "impulse psyche", as it is characterized by strong emotional impulses, inuition and moods. Das "Kindheits-Ich" hat das Symbol C, sein wissenschaftlicher Name lautet "archäopsychische Funktion". Ich nenne es die "Impulspsyche", denn charakteristisch sind starke emotionale Impulse, Inuition und Stimmungs­befindlichkeiten.
The "parent self" has the symbol P, its scientific name is "exteropsychic ego-state". Characterized by imitating the behavior (also in thinking) of parent figures of all kinds, performing rituals, and following external rules, I call it the "ritual psyche". Das "Eltern-Ich" hat das Symbol P, sein wissenschaftlicher Name lautet "exteropsychische Funktion". Charakterisiert durch das Nachahmen des Verhaltens (Denkmuster eingeschlossen) von Elternfiguren jeder Art, das Ausführen von Ritualen, und dem Befolgen externer Regeln, nenne ich es die "Ritualpsyche".

Six Personality Types

Sechs Persönlichkeitstypen

If as a model we assume that a real human personality has a dominant, an intermediate and a weak ego-state, six different basic realizations are possible:
(The names in quotation marks are only examples of typical sterotypes for each personality type; ie not every PCa is an actual fascist, and a scientist does not need to be APc!) 		Wenn wir modellhaft annehmen, daß eine tatsächliche menschliche Persönlichkeit über ein dominantes, ein mittelstarkes und ein schwaches Sub-Ich verfügt, sind sechs basale Ausprägungen möglich:
(Die Namen in Anführungszeichen sind nur Beispiele für typische, klischeehafte Vertreter der Persönlichkeitstypen; mitnichten ist jeder PCa ein wirklicher Faschist, so wie ein Wissenschaftler auch nicht zwangsläufig APc sein muß!)
  • APC (APc) = led by rational thought, also by ritualized rules, less by emotions: "scientist"
  • ACP (ACp) = led by rational thought, also by emotions, less by ritualized rules: "ideal man"
  • CAP (CAp) = led by emotions, also by rational thought, less by ritualized rules: "rebel"
  • CPA (CPa) = led by emotions, also by ritualized rules, less by rational thought: "infantile"
  • PCA (PCa) = led by ritualized rules, also by emotions, less by rational thought: "fascist"
  • PAC (PAc) = led by ritualized rules, also by rational thought, less by emotions: "bureaucrat"
  • APC (APc) = bestimmt von rationalem Denken, auch von rituellen Regeln, weniger von Emotionen: "Wissenschaftler"
  • ACP (ACp) = bestimmt von rationalem Denken, auch von Emotionen, weniger von rituellen Regeln: "Idealmensch"

The APC ("Scientist")

People with this pattern base their life on rational thought and reason. But they may also follow rules rather strictly, while they might lack awareness for the world of emotions (their own and those of others). Menschen dieses Musters gründen ihr Leben auf rationalem Denken und Vernunft. Oft jedoch befolgen sie auch Regeln recht strikt, während sie der Welt der Emotionen (ihre eigenen wie auch die anderer) gegenüber ziemlich verschlossen sind.

The ACP ("Ideal Man")

Der ACP ("Idealmensch")

People with this pattern also first think rational and act reasonably. But they are connected with their emotions as well, and can therefore live a rather rich and fulfilling life. Rules are usually not followed stubbornly, and rituals may be only used as low-level or background actions, where they don´t contradict reason or the person´s gut feelings. Menschen dieses Musters denken ebenfalls zunächst rational und handeln vernunftbasiert. Sie sind zugleich aber auch mit ihren Emotionen verbunden, und können so ein recht reiches und erfülltes Leben leben. Regeln werden meist nicht stur befolgt, und Rituale werden allenfalls als niedere oder im Hintergrund ablaufende Handlungen ausgeführt, wo weder die Vernunft noch Bauchgefühle dagegen stehen.

The CAP ("Rebel")

Der CAP ("Rebell")

People with this pattern first follow their emotions, only sometimes restricted by rational considerations and reason, and hardly ever by social conventions and rules. There are two possible subtypes:
  • The Egoistic Rebel: If the inner child is focussed on taking, they strive for immediate joy and pleasure for themselves, and tend to forget about the restrictions (social, economical, ethical, ...) of the world around them.
  • The Social Rebel: If the inner child is focussed on giving, they strive for fighting all injustice in the world. The adult self is used only as a weapon, rather than for reflecting the overall strategy.
Wherever a rule stands in their way, they may rather actively fight it (child behaviour) than find a way to deal with it in a constructive way (adult behaviour). 		Menschen dieses Musters folgen zuallererst ihren Gefühlsregungen, nur gelegentlich begrenzt durch rationale Überlegungen und Vernunft, und nahezu nie durch soziale Konventionen oder Regeln. Es gibt zwei mögliche Subtypen:
  • Der egoistische Rebell: Ist das innere Kind vom nehmenden Typ, streben sie nach sofortiger Lust- und Genußerfüllung für sich selbst, und neigen dabei dazu, die Einschränkungen ihrer Umwelt (sozial, ökonomisch, ethisch, ...) zu vergessen.
  • Der soziale Rebell: Ist das innere Kind vom gebenden Typ, streben sie danach, alles Unrecht der Welt zu bekämpfen. Das Erwachsenen-Ich wird quasi nur als Waffe gebraucht, statt dazu, über die Gesamtstrategie zu reflektieren.
Wann immer sie eine Regel stört, greifen sie sie eher aktiv an (Kind-Verhalten) statt einen Weg zu finden, konstruktiv mit ihr umzugehen (Erwachsenen-Verhalten).

The CPA ("Infantile")

Der CPA ("Kindmensch")

People with this pattern also first follow their emotions, but they also stick to rules quite willingly, while rational thought is a rarely practised ability. These infantile people, who behave like a flock of sheep, are the easiest to manipulate by political seducers, and are also the easiest to exploit. Menschen dieses Musters folgen ebenfalls zuerst ihren Gefühlen, sie halten sich aber zugleich recht bereitwillig an Regeln, während rationales Denken von ihnen eher selten geübt wird. Diese infantilen Menschen, die sich wie Schafe in einer Herde verhalten, sind es, die am leichtesten durch politische Verführer manipuliert werden können; auch lassen sie sich am leichtesten ausbeuten.

The PCA ("Fascist")

Der PCA ("Faschist")

People with this pattern put rules and rituals in the first place, but are also quite emotional. Rational thought and reason are rather avoided. Because of this mixture, these people tend to create powerful social organisations (rules and rituals paired with strong emotions and a hatred towards critical thinking), like fascism and religions. Menschen dieses Musters sehen Regeln und Rituale als den Kern des Lebens, sind zugleich jedoch recht emotional. Rationales Denken und Vernunft werden eher gemieden. Aufgrund dieser Mischung neigen jene Menschen dazu, machtvolle gesellschaftliche Organisationen (Regeln und Rituale gepaart mit starken Emotionen und Denkverboten) zu formen, wie etwa Faschismus und Religionen.

The PAC ("Bureaucrat")

Der PAC ("Bürokrat")

People with this pattern also put rules and rituals in the first place, but at the second place they will follow reason and rational considerations, while emotions play only a subordinate role in their life. These are the most machine-like of all people, executing whatever task they may be given, lacking creativity as well as heart. Menschen dieses Musters sehen ebenfalls Regeln und Rituale als den Kern des Lebens, folgen an zweiter Stelle aber Vernunft und rationalen Überlegungen, während Gefühle nur eine untergeordnete Rolle in ihrem Leben spielen. Dies sind die maschinenhaftesten aller Menschen: sie führen einfach aus, was auch immer ihnen aufgetragen wurde, unkreativ und herzlos.
Marginal note: The German sociologist Christoph Spehr introduced four political personality types in his book "The Aliens Are Among Us!": the "Alien", the "Fascist", the "Civilian" and the "Maquis". By his description, his Alien may equal the PAc (bureaucrat), his Fascist the PCa, his Civilian the CPa (infantile), and his Maquis seems to cover the remaining three types. Randbemerkung: Der Soziologe Christoph Spehr führte in seinem Buch "Die Aliens sind unter uns" vier politische Persönlichkeitstypen ein: das "Alien", den "Faschist", den "Zivilist" und den "Maquis". Nach seiner Beschreibung entspricht sein Alien wohl dem PAc (Bürokrat), sein Faschist dem PCa, sein Zivilist dem CPa (Kindmensch), und sein Maquis dürfte die restlichen drei Typen abdecken.

Personality patterns are not statically fixed. If enough pressure or influence is applied in one direction, two sub-egos may switch their place, one becoming stronger and the other becoming weaker. And although it may be easier to modify the less dominant sub-egos (APc↔ACp, CAp↔CPa, PCa↔PAc), it is also possible that the dominant sub-ego switches place with the second one (ACp↔CAp, CPa↔PCa, PAc↔APc). Persönlichkeitsmuster sind nicht statisch festgenagelt. Wenn ausreichend Druck oder Einfluß in eine Richtung ausgeübt wird, können zwei Sub-Ichs die Plätze tauschen: das eine tritt nun stärker zutage, das andere entsprechend schwächer. Und obwohl es leichter sein mag, auf die weniger dominanten Sub-Ichs einzuwirken (APc↔ACp, CAp↔CPa, PCa↔PAc), so ist es doch gleichfalls möglich, daß das dominante Sub-Ego seinen Platz mit dem zweiten tauscht (ACp↔CAp, CPa↔PCa, PAc↔APc).

How could a political seducer perform this task? Here are the main points:
  • he cannot reach the victim on the A-ego channel (rational arguments)
  • the victim is ready to follow rules and rituals, therefore creating an environment full of these will find little resistance
  • the victim best understands the language of emotions, therefore creating both fear and joy to justify the new system of rules and rituals is the main key
This is for instance how Hitler and his crew got the masses. Of course he did not turn everybody into fascists, but well many enough to establish his political plans. With associations, marches, uniforms, political events, honour ranks, entertainment and so on Hitler knew to create positive emotions, connecting them with the system. With speeches and propaganda material he increasingly then created negative emotions such as fear and hatred, to bond the people to the system, and make enough of them switch their priority from their own interests (child self) to those "higher" ones he presented (parent self). 		Wie könnte ein politischer Verführer diese Aufgabe lösen? Hier sind die Kernpunkte:
  • er kann das Opfer auf dem A-Ich-Kanal nicht erreichen (rationale Argumente)
  • das Opfer folgt bereitwillig Regeln und Ritualen, daher wird das Schaffen einer Umwelt voll davon auf wenig Widerstand stoßen
  • das Opfer versteht die Sprache der Gefühle am besten, deshalb liegt der Schlüssel darin, gleichermaßen Angst und Frohsinn zu erzeugen, um das neue System von Regeln und Ritualen zu begründen
So haben beispielweise Hitler und seine Mannschaft die Massen bekommen. Natürlich hat er nicht jedermann zu Faschisten gemacht, aber doch reichlich genug, um seine politischen Pläne umsetzen zu können. Mit Vereinen, Märschen, Uniformen, politischen Veranstaltungen, Verdiensträngen, Unterhaltung und so weiter wußte Hitler positive Emotionen zu erzeugen, die er mit dem System verband. Mit Reden und Propagandamaterial erzeugte er dann zunehmend negative Emotionen wie Angst und Haß, um die Menschen an das System zu binden, und genug von ihnen ihre Priorität wechseln zu lassen von ihren eigenen Interessen (Kindheits-Ich) hin zu jenen "höheren", die er präsentierte (Eltern-Ich).

Under which conditions would this transformation occur?
  • less chance: if the environment would demonstrate (parent self) that it is ok or even important to be emotional
  • best chance: if the person would find good arguments for being more emotional, while the environment demands only a low degree of rules and rituals to be followed
Unter welchen Voraussetzungen käme es zu dieser Transformation?
  • geringere Chance: wenn die Umwelt demonstrieren würde (Eltern-Ich), daß es ok oder gar wichtig ist, emotional zu sein
  • höchste Chance: wenn die Person gute Argumente dafür vorfinden würde, emotionaler zu sein, während die Umwelt nur wenig von zu befolgenden Regeln und Ritualen geprägt ist

Sending on all three channels

Auf allen drei Kanälen senden

Here is how to influence someone on their right channel:
  • on the A-ego channel, you need to convince them by rational arguments
  • on the C-ego channel, you need to create emotions in them, like fear or joy
  • on the P-ego channel, you need to act as a role model, or command them
So beeinflußt man jemanden über seinen richtigen Kanal:
  • für den A-Ich-Kanal mußt du ihn durch rationale Argumente überzeugen
  • für den C-Ich-Kanal mußt du Emotionen bei ihm erzeugen, etwa Angst oder Freude
  • für den P-Ich-Kanal mußt du entweder als Vorbild handeln, oder ihm befehlen

Social Conclusion

Soziale Schlußfolgerung

The goal should be a society where the majority is ACp (ideal man), only some are APc (scientist) and CAp (rebel), very few are PAc (bureaucrat) and CPa (infantile), and hardly none are PCa (fascist). This can be reached by influencing people via education, social contacts or media in the right way that suits their current personality type and the desired direction of development. Das Ziel sollte eine Gesellschaft sein, in welcher die Mehrheit ACp (Idealmensch) ist, nur manche APc (Wissenschaftler) und CAp (Rebell) sind, sehr wenige PAc (Bürokrat) und CPa (Kindmensch) sind, und fast niemand PCa (Faschist) ist. Dies kann erreicht werden durch das richtige Beeinflussen der Menschen mittels Bildung, Sozialkontakten oder Medien, so daß ihr momentanter Persönlichkeitstyp beachtet wird, wie auch die gewünschte Entwicklungsrichtung.
